First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners. How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’ For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to try specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue. Folks gather to sample three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs. At this tasting we will feature a selection of organic wines from Yorkville Cellars, with Winery owner Deborah Wallo in attendance! The full tasting list: Domaine de Ballade Cotes de Gascogne Blanc 2008 Sylvester Merlot Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy, and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world. Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers. After sampling the Dreadnought Wines sampled for the evening, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law). Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular wine tastings twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. At this tasting, we are also collecting canned goods and other new unopened food items for "Letter Carriers Food Drive Day" which is May 9! Help us gather to help the disadvantaged! Spring brings us the opportunity to explore the lighter but very interesting world of white wines. This class will introduce you to wines from around the world including sips from Germany, Italy, France and the US. As wineries around the world ‘internationalize’ the tastes of their reds, white wines continue to be produced, in even more intriguing ways. If you think “I only like reds” then we invite you to come and explore (with an open mind) the ‘whiter’ side of wine. $35.00 per person SEATING IS LIMITED TO 25 PEOPLE FOR THIS CLASS, SO Pre-Paid Non-Refundable RSVP IS REQUIRED! While Palate Partners have become very popular with their wine 'tasting' series, these are CLASSES and not casual tastings. Classes will be conducted at our retail store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District unless noted otherwise. These classes may also be purchased by private groups and businesses. At this tasting, we will be visited by author Lisa Spahr who will present her new book "World War II Radio Heroes: Letters Of Compassion". WWII Radio Heroes: Letters of Compassion is a story about strangers helping each other during a time of war. The book features more than 30 letters and postcards sent to the author’s family in 1943, alerting them of her grandfather’s capture and status as a prisoner of war. Upon discovering these letters, Ms. Spahr began researching the people who did this, and why, and reached out to find them or their next of kin, more than 60 years after the fact. Her journey is detailed in WWII Radio Heroes. Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. SOLD OUT! See June 24 for another opportunity - Italian Summer Sippers (click here to see the full listing) Palate Partners Explore The Tuscan Wines Of Triacca At A Wine Dinner On May 27, 2009 7:00 PM Enrico Biscotti, 2022 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 Domenico and Pietro Triacca began selling wine from the Valtellina in their home town of Poschiavo at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1897 they acquired a small vineyard in the Valgella area. In order to ensure a steady outlet for their wines, they opened a small inn in Campascio. In the Twenties the families of the two founding fathers went their separate ways. One branch set up under the name of P(ietro) Triacca. The other called itself Fratelli Triacca. During the summer months the heirs of Domenico (who died accidentally in 1910) traded in bilberries from the Valtellina and the Valcamonica. On a good day they would despatch up to 10,000 kilos of berries to the German-speaking part of Switzerland. From 1950 Fratelli Triacca began to bottle all their own wines on the estate. They built the necessary cellaring capacity on the other side of the border. On the Swiss side new offices and an automatic bottling plant were built. Other, more modern cellars were later built in Villa di Tirano. Profits were ploughed back into the business and a number of labour-saving, eco-friendly, quality-enhancing improvements were introduced in both vineyard and cellar, methods which were in large part revolutionary for the Valtellina. In 1969 the La Gatta estate was acquired, close to the original vineyards, as well as La Madonnina in Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area. In 1990 the Santavenere estate near Montepulciano was added. Both of these Tuscany properties required an extensive and lengthy reconstruction program. On May 27, 2009, Italian wine lovers are invited to explore the Sangiovese wines from this family tradition at a 5-Course Wine Dinner presented by Enrico Biscotti and Dreadnought Wines at Enrico’s in the Strip District, beginning at 7:00 PM. The Enrico Biscotti café, at 2022 Penn Avenue, is open 6 days a week from 6 am to 4 pm., serving torta Rustica (quiches), Pizzas made in their woodburning brick oven, beans and greens (vegetarian; kale, cannellini beans, garlic, olive oil, all steamed together), two different homemade soups, and big fat salads with field greens, blue cheese, cranberries, walnuts and roasted chicken from the oven. They also of course, make their own desserts; Cannoli from Sicily, ricotta pies, chocolate macaroons, and so many other things. The creative kitchen staff will be developing a special menu for this evening’s dinner. Dreadnought is a Pittsburgh wine distributor, representing boutique wineries from around the world, including a variety of Tuscan wines. Michael Gonze and Debra Mortillaro, co-owners of Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners recently returned from a tour of this remarkable Italian Countryside and have plenty of experiences to share with patrons. To be a part of this very special evening of Tuscan delights, pre-paid reservations of $65 per person (gratuity NOT included) are required by calling Palate Partners at (412) 391-1709 Space is limited to 22 persons, so interested parties must RSVP by May 22nd. | ||

Palate Partners, Vin Fatales, Dreadnought Wines, Patricia Boutique & Dress For Success Pittsburgh present: Women, Wine & Wardrobe! Patricia Boutique, 115 Center Avenue, Aspinwall, PA 15215 If a ‘Power Suit’ could be compared to a wine, which wine would it be? How about an evening gown? A light summer ensemble? Palate Partners, Vin Fatales, Dreadnought Wines, Patricia Boutique and Dress For Success join together for a unique evening of wine tasting and fashion to benefit Dress For Success Pittsburgh with "Women, Wine & Wardrobe" on May 28, 2009. Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in the Strip District, well known for their wine tastings, wine expertise and unique shop full of wine accessories, formed a women-only wine tasting and networking group called Vin Fatales. In response to many years of requests for donations to limitless not-for-profit causes, Palate Partners created Vin Fatales to both give women a fun and focused opportunity to gather and network, as well as to focus their fundraising efforts into one main organization: Dress for Success Pittsburgh. They still provide goods to a handful of other not-for-profits, but Dress For Success is their main beneficiary. The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find a job and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. While they may be best known for providing suits to women, it is their employment retention programs that are the cornerstone of the organization. Soon after Dress for Success was founded, they came to recognize that finding a job is only one step in a woman’s journey towards economic independence; remaining employed and building a rewarding career are equally important. To meet the need for services that would help women both find and keep jobs, they established the Professional Women's Group (PWG) program, which provides ongoing support to enable women to successfully transition into the workforce, build thriving careers and prosper in the mainstream workplace. Once a woman joins PWG she is a member for life, able to attend meetings at any affiliate throughout the world and can benefit from additional employment retention and mentoring programs. The ‘models’ for “Women, Wine & Wardrobe” will feature two clients from the program of Dress For Success Pittsburgh, Monjeana Henderson and Kim Morrison, and DFS Board Member Lisa Tagliatti, and Executive Director Leah Lizarondo Shannon. Vin Fatales is a membership group, with about 50 local businesswomen, ranging in position from President to file clerk, who gather at events created to enjoy tastes of special wines, to network and to partake in new experiences. Their upcoming event accessorizes unique fashion from Patricia Boutique in Aspinwall with matching wines from Dreadnought Wines! Patricia Boutique (in its 10th year!) is located in a century-old building in Aspinwall, a former general store, retaining the original tin ceiling and wooden floor, and the store’s fixtures are a combination of antiques and reclaimed building materials. Owner Patricia Goettel purchased the building, and lives "above the shop", in a loft-like space which had been a dance studio. Over half of the inventory in the shop is "wearable art", one of a kind items created by local, national, and international fiber artists and jewelers. Patricia Boutique represents over 40 local artists and designers, with the balance of the inventory being "special event dressing, and great white shirts". A private collector sells vintage Native American jewelry through the shop as well. Patricia has been in the fashion business "since birth". Her 30+ year career includes executive positions with Rodier Paris, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Pittsburgh Center For The Arts. She has also held board positions with Carebreak, The Program For Female Offenders, and Open Stage Theatre, teaches a world religion class at The First Unitarian Church, Shadyside, and she has also conducted wardrobing seminars for professional organizations, and taught in the Fox Chapel Adult Education program. Patricia Boutique hosts monthly in-store trunk shows and an annual anniversary party, as well as two major fundraising fashion shows annually. When Patricia called and offered her space for a Vin Fatales event, Deb Mortillaro, who was planning to present a class pertaining to describing and pairing wines with wardrobe, the collaborative wheels started turning, and “Women, Wine & Wardrobe” turned into a great fundraising opportunity. So Deb Mortillaro from Palate Partners will be pairing Dreadnought Wines with Patricia Boutique’s designer ‘ensembles’ at this fun and quirky event that benefits local women in need. On Thursday, May 28th 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Vin Fatales will gather for Cabernets and Couture at Patricia Boutique, located at 115 Center Avenue in Aspinwall, to raise funds for Dress For Success. All proceeds from the Vin Fatales events go directly to DFS, and at this event, Patricia Boutique will donate 10% of sales to DFS. Vin Fatales get into the event for $10, and the general public for $15, and reservations are required. Sorry fellas, these events are for women-only. For more information on becoming a Vin Fatale, Dress For Success, Patricia Boutique, to make reservations for Women, Wine & Wardrobe, or to learn about more wine tasting events, contact Palate Partners by calling (412) 391-8502
