First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners. August 7th. How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’ For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to try specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue. Folks gather to sample three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs. Uncorked this week: Yellow Cellars Cape White, South Africa Sylvester Syrah, California Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world. Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers. After sampling the Dreadnought Wines sampled for the evening, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law). Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular wine tastings twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

9 Spots Remain! Carefully restored and renovated to modern standards, The Priory is a 24-room European-style hotel on Pittsburgh's North Shore. It features all of the appointments of a large establishment, and the personality and personal service that only a small boutique hotel can offer. Just ask the experts. The Zagat Survey of Top U.S. Hotels, Resorts & Spas calls The Priory "...a cozy inn filled with a combination of monastic charm and modern elegance. Other features include a "congenial" staff, happy hour in the library (with complimentary wine) and "wonderful courtyard garden." On August 18, 2009, Dreadnought Wines and The Priory will join forces for a Wine Picnic in that courtyard, beginning at 6:00 PM. There will be no crusty black wieners, rubber chicken, or flaming blackened marshmallows at this picnic at The Priory. Palate Partners’ own Deb Mortillaro will be preparing a special gourmet picnic from fresh ingredients especially for this event, and present it elegantly to guests, including Veal Tornado, a delectable grilled salad, a cold soup befitting for a dog day of August, a sweet treat, and more. Dreadnought is a wine distributor in Pennsylvania, representing boutique wineries from around the world. Michael Gonze and Debra Mortillaro (an executive chef), co-owners of Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners have been bringing wine and food pairing events to Pittsburgh for over 20 years. Their Wine and Grilling Classes were so popular that they were adapted by request for several corporate events, including taking it ‘On The Road’ to Buffalo. They are proud to be partnering with The Priory for this tasteful summer wine event. For this event, Dreadnought Wines expects to be pairing the following wines with the delicacies created by Executive Chef Mortillaro: Domaine Houchart Côtes de Provence Rosé 2008, France, Yorkville Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2007, (Organic) California, Scott Harvey Zinfandel 2006, California, Domaine Mirelle & Vincent Cotes du Rhone 2005, France. The German and Swiss settlers of Pittsburgh banded together to form St Mary's Parish in 1848 and constructed the Church in 1852. Its Italianate classical architecture is one of a few examples of that style in the city. Originally, two Byzantine-style domes rested on each corner. At the turn of the century these were altered to a more conventional dome. In 1888, The Priory was added to serve as a home for Benedictine priests and brothers serving the Parish, as well as a temporary haven for those travelling to the St. Vincent Archabbey. On this evening, the courtyard becomes haven for oenophiliacs. To be a part of this very special gourmet picnic and wine event, in one of Pittsburgh’s most beautifully restored historical sites, pre-paid reservations of $58 per person are required by calling Palate Partners at (412) 391-8502. Space is limited, so interested parties must RSVP. Ants not included.
