First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners. September 4th. How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’ For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to try specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue. Folks gather to sample three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs. Uncorked this evening: Castello delle Regine Poggio delle Regine Bianco 2007 - Italy Wooloomooloo Red Blend 2007 - Australia Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in California, Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world. Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers. After sampling the Dreadnought Wines sampled for the evening, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law). Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular wine tastings twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

A few weeks ago, we had a small event at the store for the press. We gave them a mini-tour of our upcoming class season. Press reps moved around the room, experiencing one or two aspects of each of our upcoming classes. From Wine 101 to Wine For Turkeys, they stopped, sipped, and learned what the classes we offer are all about. They were amazed at all that the classes involved once they stopped to smell the bouquet! Now, we're going to do it for you! On Tuesday, September 8, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, we are inviting potential wine students to come and do the same thing! For $5 admission, we will have demonstrations set up around the store, and explain what all of the different classes are about. As an added bonus - if you register for a class that night - we will apply the $5 tour admission to the class you choose. Reservations are required - we need to know how many to expect. Call us at (412) 391-8502 or click the link below to RSVP.

Blind Tasting Class YOU asked for it - and here it IS! The ultimate in wine tasting. All we’re going to tell you is that there will be three white and three red wines - and then YOU will have to tell us the rest! The truth is, to make it more challenging, WE won’t even know which wine is which. We will have our staff cover the bottles, number them, and leave. We honestly won’t know which wine is which either. Test your tasting skills with us and lets see who gets to be the wine ‘expert’ of evening! A tasting class with no pressure - just sips of fun! Last time we had a blast and everyone did very well. $40.00 per person (412) 391-8502

ONE seat remains! What: 7th Annual Wine, Wienie and Baseball Night For more information: 412-391-8502 For the last six years, Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District have been bringing together oenopheliacs and Pirate fans for an evening of fun, franks and fireworks, and this year, on Saturday, September 26th, they’ll make it seven! Owners Debbie Mortillaro and Mike Gonze gather together a group of top-shelf wine lovers at their shop at 5:00 pm, top their heads with a free Pirates baseball cap, and start them off with a barbecue grill full of Zweigle’s white-hot wienies, which Deb special orders from Rochester, NY. Zweigle’s started in a small Rochester, NY neighborhood back in 1880 when C. Whilehem Zweigle and his wife Josephine Zweigle started making homemade quality sausages in a small butcher shop. The sausages were so delicious that their reputation for great flavor and superior taste soon spread throughout the city. In 1925, Zweigle’s introduced the first white hot dog, locally known as the “white hot.” It is the most unique product that people associate with the Zweigle’s name, and what the people in Rochester, NY now take pride in knowing the exclusivity of this product. Palate Partner’s patrons have been enjoying them since Deb started bring them in for this special event. Of course, red wienies will also be available for the traditionalists, as well as a plateful of other picnic goodies. Mike Gonze and Dreadnought Wines compliment the picnic palates with carefully selected wines, and then the whole gang loads onto a Pittsburgh Water Limo at 6:30 for a ride to PNC Park. And yes…on the big boat, it has actually become tradition to burst into song with “Proud Mary”. When the boat arrives at PNC Park, revelers will enjoy the Pirates versus Dodgers game, as well as the big bam boom of Skyblast, and the music of 70’s superband, Foreigner! Following the evening of festivities, the happy party will return to the Pittsburgh Water Limo, and be floated back to Palate Partners in the Strip. Reservations are required, and space is limited. Tickets for this entire evening of fun are only $48 per person, and can be purchased at the store at 2013 Penn Avenue, or by calling Palate Partners at (412) 391-8502
