First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners. December 18th. How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’ For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to try specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue. Folks gather to sample three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs. Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world. Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers. After sampling the Dreadnought Wines sampled for the evening, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law). Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular wine tastings twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

Palate Partners Presents A Fall Class Open House Mini-Tour January 11th Palate Partners presents a regular series of Wine Classes which have been developed to meet the ever changing and diverse needs of their patrons. Some are single classes, while others are presented in a series. They cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from serious to fun, some geared toward more educated palates, and some designed to help wine ‘newbies’ discover the finer aspects of wine appreciation and enjoyment. All help to de-mystify wine and its unique terminology. The Wine Classes will be taught by Mike Gonze, President of Dreadnought Wines, who offers over twenty years of wine teaching experience and is a member of the Society of Wine Educators, and Deb Mortillaro, who brings her Culinary Institute of America training to the table for pairing wines with the complexities of food. Some classes may feature a guest wine expert. Last season, Palate Partners had a small event at the store for the press. They gave them a mini-tour of the upcoming class season. Press reps moved around the room, experiencing one or two aspects of each of the upcoming classes. From Wine 101 to Wine For Turkeys, they stopped, sipped, and learned what the classes offered are all about. They were amazed at all that the classes involved once they stopped to smell the bouquet! A few weeks later, Palate Partners did it for the public and wine lovers were able to discover what they did or did not know about wines and pairings before committing to take a class. On Monday, January 11th, from 5:30 - 7:30 PM, they are inviting potential wine students to come and do the same thing! For $5 admission, they will have demonstrations set up around the store, and explain what all of the different classes are about. As an added bonus - if someone registers for a class that night - they will apply the $5 tour admission to the class chosen. The following classes will be previewed: All About Scott Harvey Wine 101 Series Saturday Quickie Wines Of Bordeaux Olive Oil Tasting Class Wine 102 Saturday Quickie Blind Tasting: California Cabernets VS Meritage Blends Wines Of Australia Saturday Quickie Wine & Dessert Spring Into Wine Reservations are required.
