Wines Of Bordeaux
Thursday, February 4, 6:30 – 8:00 PM
This is a focused study of a particular classic region that stems from a private event that we did for a corporate client. Bordeaux is probably the most well-know wine region in France and counts for one third of the good quality French wines (AOC, crus bourgeois, crus classés).
The wines are so good there that a Bordeaux ranking is needed to classify the best of the best. Premiers grands crus classés (1st growth) - Deuxièmes grands crus classés (2nd growth) - Troisièmes grands crus classés (3rd growth) - Quatrièmes grands crus classés (4th growth) - Cinquièmes grands crus classés (5th growth). Bordeaux has about 7,000 chateaux !
A chance to taste the grand dad of wine. Includes at least one 1st growth wine.
$70.00 per person
Class size limited to 12 persons.
Pre-paid reservations required.

First and Third Friday Wine Tastings at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners.
February 5th - with Special Guests From Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre!
How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’
For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to learn about specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday "Wine-Knows" at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue.
Folks gather to learn about three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs.
Two dancers from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will be hanging out with us at this tasting, in costume, along with a representaive of the Ballet to information on their upcoming “In the Upper Room” and “Company B" production with sippers.
Described by choreographer Twyla Tharp as "fierce, driving and relentless," the movement of In the Upper Room is an edgy blend of ballet and modern that leads dancers through an energetic tour de force. In Company B, a program set to the swinging tunes of the Andrews Sisters, Pittsburgh native Paul Taylor explores the realities of World War II America through the social dances of the 1940s. These works will appear February 12-14 at the Benedum Center.
How DO they stand on their toes like that?? Well...let's just say it takes a lot of practice, muscle control...and some mighty fine custom shoes.
Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world.
Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers.
After learning about the Wines represented by Dreadnought, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law).
Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular "Wine-Knows" twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

Blind Tasting: California Cabernets VS Meritage Blends
Tuesday, February 16, 6:00 – 7:30 PM
Can you tell the difference?
As a result of decades of cross-pollination between the wine industries of California and Bordeaux, beginning with the seminal joint venture of Robert Mondavi and the Baron Philippe de Rothschild in 1979, styles of California Cabernet Sauvignon have taken two directions: 1) The original 100% varietal Cabernet Sauvignon; and 2) Meritage blends.
The differences between meritage wines and pure Cabernet Sauvignon are blurred by U. S. labeling regulations. Many wines labeled Cabernet Sauvignon contain small amounts of Merlot or Cabernet Franc. So unless the label specifies that it's made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, we really can't be sure. However, when a Cabernet is seriously blended, the label will often give the percentages of the components.
It's been our experience that California Cabernet Sauvignon can stand on its own only when it's made from the very best fruit. Otherwise, it benefits from artful blending.
Join us for an educational experience as we give your tongue a lesson in detecting the differences, and your VQ a lift in label reading. “Blind Tasting” was the class favorite of our ‘Wine 102’ class.
