Olive Oil Tasting Class Rescheduled 03/15

Start: 03/15/2010 - 18:30

End: 03/15/2010 - 20:00

DUE TO THE BLIZZARD OF FEB, THIS CLASS HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED

Olive Oil Tasting Class that was to be held
Monday, February 8, 6:30 PM - 8PM

Will now be held on Monday, March 15th at the same time. If you had reservations for the February class, they are still good for the March 15th session. Please confirm your attendance.

Tasting olive oil is an art, but it can also be fun and worth learning. As in the case of the wine connoisseur and his wines, a certain amount of knowledge (and quite a lot of practice) is required to objectively classify olive oils according to taste. Culinary Institute of America alum and executive chef Deb Mortillaro will guide students through the ins and outs of the olive.

With variability in quality, the olive oil consumer runs quite a risk of purchasing a second rate product, which could easily end up completely ruining the very food it is supposed to improve. A good olive oil should subtly enhance the flavors of the specific dish, not distort or overpower them. One should thus get into the habit of tasting any untried olive oil before blindly using it over one’s food. The advantages of using a good olive oil in one’s everyday cooking are legion, not only from the flavor point of view, but also because of the associated health benefits. Deb has recently done an intense study of Olive Oil at UC Davis and will share her new insight to Olive Oil.

(the last class we held quickly sold out)
$40 per person
Pre-paid reservations required.
(412) 391-8502

Wine And Dessert Class 03/17

Start: 03/17/2010 - 18:30

End: 03/17/2010 - 20:00

Wine & Dessert
Wednesday, March 17– 6:30 - 8:00 PM

When it comes time for the post meal desserts, most people head for the coffee pot, or feel that the sweetest of cakes need to be accompanied by a shot of espresso.

Not so!

There is a wide range of desserts wines available for pairing with a broad spectrum of sweet treats. And no, not all of the wines are ‘sweet’. In their gift basket selection, Palate Partners has always offered the ‘Chocolate & Red’ combination. The holidays have always brought us ‘Bubbles and Bon Bons’.

Here comes the class that will teach your tongue how to enjoy a good serious wine with your finest of desserts. Sample sweet goodies paired with wines.

$45 per person
Pre-paid reservations required.
(412) 391-8502

Friday "Wine-Knows" 03/19

Start: 03/19/2010 - 17:30

End: 03/19/2010 - 19:30

First and Third Friday Wine-Knows at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners.

March 19th

How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’

For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to learn about specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday "Wine-Knows" at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue.

Folks gather to learn about three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs.

Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world.

Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers.

After receiving an education about the Wines represented by Dreadnought, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law).

Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular "Wine-Knows" twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

Don't MISS this evening! We will announce the beginning of a new club for wine-lovers! We will be the Pittsburgh Branch of an International Wine-Appreciation Organization. Participants can even earn a fantabulous plaque for achieving a goal!

How many grapes have YOU tasted?

In an extension of our Wine 101 series, we continue to learn about wine regions and the subtleties of tasting wine. In this three-session series, students will take another step toward tasting wines like the professionals and working on accurately describing what they are tasting. We will explore grape blends and what characteristics of a wine are caused by the different varietals in the blend. Fun and informative, and a little deeper than wine 101. (it is not necessary to have taken wine 101)

Spring Into Wine Class 03/31

Start: 03/31/2010 - 18:30

End: 03/31/2010 - 20:00

Spring Into Wine
Wednesday, March 31, 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Are we tired of winter yet? It’s that time of year when spring starts teasing us. The days get noticeably longer, temperatures here in the Northeast start flirting with readings above frigid and, best of all for us, the wines of spring start making their first appearances.

And so, as we enter the homestretch of winter, it’s a great time to enjoy these early tastes of spring in white and pink.

What better reason to lighten things up with a selection of whites and rosés that will remind you that a new season is, indeed, around the corner.

Samples of salmon and other spring goodies will be paired with wines.

$45 per person
Pre-paid reservations required.
(412) 391-8502

Start: 04/02/2010 - 17:30

End: 04/02/2010 - 19:30

First and Third Friday "Wine-Knows" at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners with special guests - Costumed Dancers from Pittsburgh Ballet's "Swan Lake".

April 2nd

And at this event, we'll be joined by costumed dancers from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's production of Swan Lake.
