September 17th

How many times have you stood in a State Store\, staring at shelves of wine bottles\, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’

For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to learn about specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday \\"Wine-Knows\\" at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue.

Folks gather to learn about three red and three white wines\, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze\, complimented by breads and fine cheeses\, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs.

Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society\, and the AWS National Conference\, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer\, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon\, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US\, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France\, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers\, distributors\, the Culinary Institute of America\, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world.

Needless to say\, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers.

First opened in 1956\, The Point Restaurant was a high-style quiet meeting place serving fine food in a secluded locale. The Point continued through a few owners and was renamed ‘Senators’ in the late 1990’s. <a target=\\"_blank\\" href=\\"http\://www.pointbrugge.com\\" title=\\"Visit Point Brugge Cafe online\\">Point Brugge Café (click name to visit their website) opened January 2005 as a neighborhood gathering spot modeled on cafés found in European cities.

They serve a variety of bistro dishes as small plates and dinners. Moules or Mussels served in a choice of sauce accompanied by frites is their most popular dish.

Dreadnought Wines is a Pittsburgh wine distributor located in the Strip District\, representing boutique wineries from around the world.

On Monday\, October 4th\, 2010 at 6\:00 pm\, Pointe Brugge Café Chef Kevin Hunninen and Michael Gonze of Dreadnought Wines will join together to create a palate pleasing evening of wine and culinary art with a special wine dinner.

Guests will be treated with the following courses and matched sippage\:

<span style=\\"text-decoration\: underline\;\\">Hors D’oeuvres

Francois Montand Brut Rose
This pink gem is an elegant marriage of fruit and toast that delivers a fine balance of vibrancy and depth. The creamy texture is decorated with a palate full of the red fruit flavors of cherry and raspberry ending with a long\, crisp finish.

Leon Palais Blanc de Blancs Brut
Tiny little bubbles percolate up from the bottom of the glass and the mousse is dense and persistent for a few moments. The nose shows notes of fresh hay\, blanched almonds and apple. In the mouth this wine has nice persistence but is softer than typical Champagne.

Chef’s Selection\, including Tuna tartar\, local and imported cheeses\, and other assorted appetizers.

<span style=\\"text-decoration\: underline\;\\">First Course

Graziano Chenin Blanc Mendocino 2007
This is the first vintage of their Chenin Blanc\, Mendocino produced under the Graziano label. The wine was made in a dry European style with crisp clean aromas and flavors of pears\, apples and minerals. Its body is full and rich but well-balanced by good mouth-watering acidity.

Pan seared scallops\, mixed greens\, grilled asparagus\, sesame roasted beets\, honey-ginger-lime vinaigrette.

<span style=\\"text-decoration\: underline\;\\">Entrees

Heron Sonoma Pinot Noir 2008
Offers very pretty\, polished Pinot Noir character. Feels rich and silky in the mouth\, with flavors of raspberries\, cherries\, cola and spices - The Wine Enthusiast\, March 2010

Scott Harvey Syrah 2006 (Red Label)
Beautiful medium French oak\, fresh front palate with bright blueberries on the back palate. Soft mouth feel\, well structured wine with a long full finish.

Choice of\:

King Salmon with caramelized onion-pecan risotto\, haricots verts\, beurre rouge sauce.

Roasted Jamison Farm Lamb with herbed anna-style potatoes\, braised kale and mushrooms\, apple-rosemary jus.

<span style=\\"text-decoration\: underline\;\\">Dessert

Norman Vineyards \\"The Monster\\" Zinfandel 2006
Elegant aromas of blueberry\, blackberry and ripe bing cherry are enhanced by brambles and spicy notes of fennel and pepper. Remarkably balanced\, the full body\, firm acidity and intense berry flavors lead to a structured\, cocoa-powder finish with mouth-filling texture.

Belgian Chocolate Mousse\, raspberry sauce\, fresh berries\, cigarette cookies.

To be a part of this very special evening of Bistro delights\, pre-paid reservations are required by calling Point Brugge Cafe at (412) 441-3334. The cost is $100 per person (tax and gratuity included). Space is limited\, so interested parties must RSVP by Friday\, October 1st.
