First and Third Friday "Wine-Knows" at Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners.
October 1st
How many times have you stood in a State Store, staring at shelves of wine bottles, wondering ‘will I like it after I buy it?’
For many years Palate Partners and Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District have been giving wine lovers the opportunity to learn about specialty wines before buying them at their First and Third Friday "Wine-Knows" at their store at 2013 Penn Avenue.
Folks gather to learn about three red and three white wines, carefully selected by owner Mike Gonze, complimented by breads and fine cheeses, and to enjoy the company of other Oenophiliacs.
Mike Gonze has taught classes for Community College of Allegheny County for over twenty years and created their wine education curriculum. Along with presenting seminars for the local Chapters of the American Wine Society, and the AWS National Conference, Mike frequently presents custom wine seminars for local corporations like Bayer, American Express and First Tier Bank. He is an active member of the Society of Wine Educators and has attended their conferences in Oregon, Seattle and Vancouver. Mike is a frequent visitor to wineries in the US, has visited wineries in the Loire Valley and the Southern Rhone regions of France, Italy and regularly attends tastings sponsored by importers, distributors, the Culinary Institute of America, and boutique wineries. Mike maintains a personal wine cellar with over 1000 bottles specializing in lesser known wines from the US and around the world.
Needless to say, Mike knows his wines. And he loves bringing that knowledge to Pittsburghers.
After receiving an education about the Wines represented by Dreadnought, patrons can order the wines they like, and pick them up two business days later (as required by state law).
Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet each other at these regular "Wine-Knows" twice monthly, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Palate Partners/Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. The events are open to the public at the cost of only $12.00 per person and no RSVP is necessary. For more information, call (412) 391-8502

First opened in 1956, The Point Restaurant was a high-style quiet meeting place serving fine food in a secluded locale. The Point continued through a few owners and was renamed ‘Senators’ in the late 1990’s. Point Brugge Café (click name to visit their website) opened January 2005 as a neighborhood gathering spot modeled on cafés found in European cities.
They serve a variety of bistro dishes as small plates and dinners. Moules or Mussels served in a choice of sauce accompanied by frites is their most popular dish.
Dreadnought Wines is a Pittsburgh wine distributor located in the Strip District, representing boutique wineries from around the world.
On Monday, October 4th, 2010 at 6:00 pm, Pointe Brugge Café Chef Kevin Hunninen and Michael Gonze of Dreadnought Wines will join together to create a palate pleasing evening of wine and culinary art with a special wine dinner.
Guests will be treated with the following courses and matched sippage:
Hors D’oeuvres
Francois Montand Brut Rose
This pink gem is an elegant marriage of fruit and toast that delivers a fine balance of vibrancy and depth. The creamy texture is decorated with a palate full of the red fruit flavors of cherry and raspberry ending with a long, crisp finish.
Leon Palais Blanc de Blancs Brut
Tiny little bubbles percolate up from the bottom of the glass and the mousse is dense and persistent for a few moments. The nose shows notes of fresh hay, blanched almonds and apple. In the mouth this wine has nice persistence but is softer than typical Champagne.
Chef’s Selection, including Tuna tartar, local and imported cheeses, and other assorted appetizers.
First Course
Graziano Chenin Blanc Mendocino 2007
This is the first vintage of their Chenin Blanc, Mendocino produced under the Graziano label. The wine was made in a dry European style with crisp clean aromas and flavors of pears, apples and minerals. Its body is full and rich but well-balanced by good mouth-watering acidity.
Pan seared scallops, mixed greens, grilled asparagus, sesame roasted beets, honey-ginger-lime vinaigrette.
Entrees
Heron Sonoma Pinot Noir 2008
Offers very pretty, polished Pinot Noir character. Feels rich and silky in the mouth, with flavors of raspberries, cherries, cola and spices - The Wine Enthusiast, March 2010
Scott Harvey Syrah 2006 (Red Label)
Beautiful medium French oak, fresh front palate with bright blueberries on the back palate. Soft mouth feel, well structured wine with a long full finish.
Choice of:
King Salmon with caramelized onion-pecan risotto, haricots verts, beurre rouge sauce.
Roasted Jamison Farm Lamb with herbed anna-style potatoes, braised kale and mushrooms, apple-rosemary jus.
Dessert
Norman Vineyards "The Monster" Zinfandel 2006
Elegant aromas of blueberry, blackberry and ripe bing cherry are enhanced by brambles and spicy notes of fennel and pepper. Remarkably balanced, the full body, firm acidity and intense berry flavors lead to a structured, cocoa-powder finish with mouth-filling texture.
Belgian Chocolate Mousse, raspberry sauce, fresh berries, cigarette cookies.
To be a part of this very special evening of Bistro delights, pre-paid reservations are required by calling Point Brugge Cafe at (412) 441-3334. The cost is $100 per person (tax and gratuity included). Space is limited, so interested parties must RSVP by Friday, October 1st.

Moon Township Native, Penn State Alum And Award Winning California Winemaker Gary Eberle Pours a Special Wine Tasting at Dreadnought Wines On October 25, 2010.
Thirty years ago, Moon Township native Gary Eberle had an epiphany. After achieving academic and athletic success at Penn State University in the 1960’s – and while pursuing his doctorate in zoology at Louisiana State University – Eberle met a professor who introduced him to the world of wine, which significantly changed his life. Shortly thereafter, Gary made the move to Northern California and in 1973 graduated from U.C. Davis’s winemaking doctoral program and headed straight to Paso Robles.
In 1973, Gary Eberle began his career in the wine industry by heading his family’s Estrella River Winery (currently Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles) and produced 500,000 cases a year at its facility. Eberle’s pioneering spirit didn’t stop there. In 1980, he co-founded the Paso Robles Appellation and in 1983, Gary opened the doors to his own Eberle Winery with the premiere of Eberle’s 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Eberle handcrafts 25,000 cases of wine each year from surrounding Estate vineyards. And, after more than 25 years since the release of the Eberle label, the winery consistently remains one of the highest award-winning wineries in the United States.
Since 1980, Dreadnought Wines in Pittsburgh's Strip District has proudly represented Eberle Wines in Pennsylvania, and owner Mike Gonze is thrilled to have this opportunity to share an evening with Gary, presenting his award-winning wines to the tongues of the Dreadnought clientele.
Pittsburgh wine lovers can meet and greet Gary Eberle, the man whose name is on the label, at this very special wine tasting on Monday, October 25th, 2010, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Dreadnought Wines store at 2013 Penn Avenue in the Strip District. Admission is $15. Reservations are appreciated. Those interested in attending may RSVP by calling (412) 391-1709 or by clicking below.
Mr. Eberle will also be present at a dinner featuring his wines at the Carlton on Tuesday, October 26 – call (412) 391-4152 for more information on that dinner. Click HERE to visit their site.

When you visit a set of wineries on tours, you will be in areas that have been designated official wine growing regions called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Here are some important ideas that will help you understand what the meaning is of these wine growing regions.
When an AVA is designated on the wine bottle’s label, 85% of that wine must come from the AVA.
AVAs are geographic locations that have the same climate, soil, and elevation and similar properties that give the wine a certain characteristic. Gary Eberle in part “wrote “the rules of Paso Robles AVA.
There can be sub-AVAs which means there can be several AVA’s designated within a larger AVA area. Example: The
But Gary Eberle, who started Eberle winery on the east side of Paso Robles in 1979, has been a vocal opponent of a Westside appellation, insisting that area producers should promote the entire region. He's since somewhat softened that stance, but still feels that a Westside appellation makes no sense. "I really don't care [about it] … But within the [proposed] Westside appellation you've got the coldest vineyards and the hottest, the wettest and the driest, the highest and the lowest. So I don't know how you can take that viticultural area and say we're homogenous. It was done for marketing reasons," he said.
Eberle isn't alone in his reservations about the utility of a Westside AVA. Last year, 31 area estates formed the Paso Robles AVA Committee, which has delineated 10 or possibly 11 new subappellations for the region.
