Eberle Estate Cabernet - 91pts Wine Enthusiast Magazine
Review: Eberle's Estate Cab is perhaps the single most underrated Cabernet Sauvignon produced in California. The '07 is one of the best in my memory, and I've had Eberle Cabs all the way back to the late 1970s. This one exhibits rich, ripe dark berry fruit, hints of mocha and vanilla, and a full-bodied, rounded impression on the palate. With all that it's beautifully balanced and a candidate for the cellar if you're a serious wine collector. Eberle Cabernets can be enjoyed when young, but they age remarkably well for up to twenty years, sometimes longer. 93 points, Robert Whitley, Aug 23, 2011

Paso Robles, California. Eberle Reserve Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is declared only in exceptional vintages. The Reserve is the “best of the best” of all the Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Lots are ‘cherry picked’ and tagged as designate reserve barrels where they are monitored closely and tasted regularly. The wine is aged for twenty four months in French oak, and then aged in bottle for an additional three years before release. Since Gary started his label in 1979, only fourteen Reserve Estate Cabernet Sauvignons have been declared: 1981, 1982, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2007.

Mendocino County, California. Heron believes in the ”less is more” philosophy when it comes to the influence of the winemaker on the wine – better to let the fruit express itself. The key to this Merlot is balance. To get there, ripe fruit with the right acidity was fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and new and used French barrels. Look for red and black cherries, dark plum, a touch of vanilla, and well-integrated soft tannins.

Napa Valley, California. The 2007 Howell Mountain Merlot has aromas of bright raspberry, cassis and plum fruits with sage and hints of vanilla. As the wine opens green tea leaves and cedar start to emerge. The mouth feel is medium-full with smooth tannins that work well with the flavors of berries, sage and vanilla. This vintage has great balance and is approachable now with a little air and should age well for another 5 to 7 years.

This Pinot is truly reserve status. It opens with soft, sensual, ripe red fruits, berry pie, sun-warmed strawberries and sweet red cherry. Paso Robles, California. The 2009 vintage has a deep purple color accompanied by youthful almost florescent hues. One sniff identifies this wine as a ‘New World’ Syrah. The aromas are clean and bright dominated by scents of juicy boysenberry and ripe black raspberry. The earthy terroir driven flavors, common in ‘Old World’ Syrah, are relegated to the back seat as there is just a hint of flint and mineral in the background. The bouquet features a unique smoky scent that comes from barrels toasted over a hickory flame. On the palate, bright succulent flavors of red and black fruits mingle with those of hazelnut and chocolate. The texture of the 2009 vintage is not as thick as previous vintages, but the tannins remain soft, smooth and well integrated.

Silvaspoons Vineyard, Alta Mesa, Lodi, California. Tannat is native to the Madiran region of southeastern France, but is has come to fame in South America where it is recognized as the national grape of Uruguay. Renown for its substancial tannins, Tannat is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to help mitigate Tannat’s astringency, our production techniques have produced a robust wine that hints at Tannat’s brawny nature, but delivers a rich flavor with balanced extract and tannins. Tannat is a bit of a departure for us in that the fruit forward nature of the Runquist wines takes a backseat to more terroir driven flavors of smoke, leather and earth along with ripe plums and black fruits. For those of you that enjoy a Rhone style red this is the wine in the Runquist line up for you.

Heron firmly believes in the “less is more” philosophy; a winemaker’s job is to allow the best qualities of the fruit to shine through. They are one of the few wineries in California not using malolactic fermentation on Chardonnay because they prefer the natural bright acidity of the grape. The result? This vintage shows pure chardonnay fruit: bright citrus, peach and pear aromas and flavor – not overoaked – it is elegantly balanced.

Composed of 80% Grenache and 20% mixed grapes (Mourdèvre, Syrah, and Clairette). Fermented in tanks for three weeks and then aged for 12 months in old barrels before being bottled. Youthful purple. Explosively perfumed nose offers luscious aromas of strawberry, raspberry preserves and anise. Round and juicy, displaying supple red fruit flavors, gentle tannins and a long, suave finish. Tannins build with air but don’t detract from the sweet fruit.

Beautiful deep plum / purple color. The color alone sets this example apart from most others sampled recently from this appellation. Deeply fruited aromatics, too, are singular for this example and include richly scented nuances of red raspberries, ripe plums and that classic nuance of a Provencal Village. These aromas of spice and ripe red and blue fruits, with hints of black olive, are classic southern French. Soft, supple and deeply fruited flavors on the palate combine that plummy nuance from the aromas with silky tannins to coat the palate with blue fruits and zero hard edges. A beautiful example of a classic southern French "house wine" that will showcase your roasted chicken or leg of lamb with herbs to a "T".

75% grenache, 15% carignan, 5% syrah, 5% cinsault. Organic. Forward, vivid aromas of raspberry and strawberry leadthe way with this light red. Engaging red berry flavors, presented in an elegant style, linger on the delicate finish. It’s a gentle, somewhat understated wine, as fresh as can be and thoroughly charming.

Deep ruby red in color with an intense nose of roasted red fruit, cassis, dried herbs, smoke and spice. Medium-full in body with mild tannins, it is concentrated and rich on the palate and well balanced to enjoy over the next 5-6 years. Long and lingering on the finish.

35% Clairette, 35% Grenache Blanc, 15% Roussanne, 15% Borbulenc. A powerful wine, well structured, can be drunk in early years but has very good potential. It can accompany all types of red meat and cheese.
